Legislative e-Zine |

Legislative e-Zine
by Bruce P. Ely, James E. Long, Jr., William T. Thistle, II
March 30, 2009—Filibustering stole the show in both houses during the first week back after the Spring recess, with neither body passing a single bill. More importantly, the lock-down may continue in the House unless a compromise is reached regarding the various proposals to reduce or remove the state sales tax on groceries—and then another filibuster could break out over the legalization of video gambling. However, two important tax measures we have been monitoring closely this session were signed into law by Governor Riley last week – the Qualified Investment Partnership / Film Incentives Bill (Act 2009-144) and a bill that converts the offshore oil and gas severance tax to a gross proceeds-based tax (Act 2009-147), stemming from the ExxonMobil severance tax litigation. We anticipate that several tax proposals supported or drafted by the influential Alabama Education Association (AEA) may be introduced in the next week or so, including a proposal that would impose mandatory combined reporting for corporate income tax purposes.

Surviving Through the Recession |
|
Surviving Through the Recession
J. Barry Tidwell, CPA, CVA—featured in Birmingham Magazine
As the recession deepens, I wanted
to share with middle market CEOs
some advice and counsel that will
help you manage your business
effectively through the recession—
and support your emergence on the
other side of this thing more vibrant
than ever. As a trusted business advisor
to the mid-market for more than
two decades, these guidelines have
helped provide for the success of
hundreds of my clients and friends,
and they can work for you.
First, stay positive and upbeat.
It’s not counter-intuitive; it’s what
you must do now. As far back as the
1950s, business sage Earl
Nightingale had observed that we
actually “become what we think
about,” and others over the ages
have advised us that “what we
believe, we will achieve.” You are a
leader, and people will follow your
example. A genuine bright spot?
Temporarily low oil prices and affordable
gas and diesel. However, know
that oil will inevitably increase in cost
again due to numerous factors. read more (PDF)
