Student Video Contest

LIGHTS! CAMERA! ACTION!
Student member video contest announced

Inspired by the Academy Awards, the crack ASCPA film squad decided to share the fun of making and editing videos with the Alabama Society’s student members.  Ansab Ali, outgoing intern, created the Lights! Camera! Action! video contest and launched it the week of the Oscars in early March.  Working from the concept that CPAs are NOT all nerdy bean counters, the videos will blast apart stereotypes and show that accounting is an exciting and stimulating career.  All student members are invited to enlist the help of family, friends, and fellow accounting majors in their efforts to create the ultimate indie CPA movie.

Lights! Camera! Action! runs from March 5 to May 15.  The videos should be 1:00 to 3:00 minutes in length and exhibit humor and creativity – with a “G” rating, please!

First prize is a Sony Blu-ray player, second prize is DVDs of two Hollywood movies which feature an accountant as a main character (a complete list of the movies is on the website) and third place is a $25 Amazon gift card.  The Society will announce the winners June 1 from the ASCPA’s own version of the red carpet.

Contest rules are listed on the Accounting Movies/Lights! Camera! Action! page of the student website.  Submit your entry to Communications Director Diane Christy, dchristy@ascpa.org and let the popcorn and Jujubes rain down!

Dr. Deravi featured as "Go-To-Guy" for Economy

If you participated in the ASCPA Industry Conference or Governmental Accounting and Auditing Conference in 2009, you may recognize the name of Dr. Keivan Deravi. With charm, wit, and an uncanny sense he shared with the ASCPA members his thoughts on the state and direction of the Alabama economy.

This month, in the Montgomery Business Journal, Dr. Deravi is featured as the "Go-to Guy" for all things economy. Click here to read what he had to say.

ASCPA Staying Green with help of DavisDirect

DavisDirect Receives Green Leadership Award

DavisDirect, printer of all ASCPA publications, including the Alabama CPA Magazine, was recently recognized by Max Federal Credit Union.  Emile Vaughan, president of DavisDirect, received the 2009 Green Leadership Award for the company’s commitment to recycling and use of sustainable resources.  A major initiative is their certification by the Forest Stewardship Council. Certification indicates that the company has met a rigorous set of requirements to establish a chain-of-custody path from sustainable forest materials to a completed product.  DavisDirect is one of only seven Alabama printing companies who has achieved certification.

As Jeannine Birmingham took a few moments to talk to Vaughan, he revealed that the Alabama Society can qualify to use the FSC imprint on its publications, because of DavisDirect’s certification.  Using the logo will indicate the Society’s commitment to “going green” and will help raise awareness.

As the Forest Stewardship Council’s website states: “Corporate social responsibility issues are becoming a core component of corporate brands. Carrying the FSC-certification logo on your print products tells the world that you support the highest social and environmental standards in the market where you use paper.  Your purchase of FSC-certified paper and print products contribute to conservation, responsible management, and community-level benefits for people near the forests that provide your paper.”

Congratulations to DavisDirect and their very capable staff, including Bob Akers, the ASCPA’s point of contact, for their vision.  Look for the FSC imprint in future issues of the Alabama CPA Magazine, CPE marketing, and other publications.

The Good, Bad, and Ugly of Social Networking

Social Networking: First Do No Harm!

Robert H. Spencer, PhD, K2 Enterprises

It has been estimated that more than 76 million “millennials” (Americans born between 1978 and 2000) are ready to enter the workforce throughout the next decade. At the same time significant numbers of the “Baby Boomer” generation will be retiring. There is a good chance that you fall into one of these groups or a sub-gender thereof.

It seems that as younger workers are graduating and entering the work force, we are undergoing a significant sea change in how workers view and respect sensitive information in the daily course of business. By that I mean that this group seems to view information in the workplace differently. If fact, they may have always looked at data differently, but the advent of Social Media tools such as Facebook and Twitter has changed our ability to rapidly access and disseminate information. This makes it more important than ever to be sensitive to our responsibilities to guard our clients' information.
