Legislative e-Zine |
Legislative e-Zine
by Bruce P. Ely, James E. Long, Jr., William T. Thistle, II
Last week marked the half-way point in this legislative session, and both houses were focused on proposals designed to provide relief to businesses and reduce unemployment. The House unanimously passed Rep. Robert Bentley’s Reemployment Act of 2010, which is similar to a proposal that is part of Governor Riley’s “Jumpstarting Jobs” legislative package (the Governor’s package has not been brought up for consideration so far this session). Rep. Richard Lindsey, Chair of the House Education Appropriations Committee, stated that he preferred HB 260 over the Governor’s package because it guarantees long-range employment for workers. On the other hand, Rep. Mike Hubbard, House Minority Leader, stated that he still favors the Governor’s package because of stronger incentives targeted to counties with high unemployment rates.
On a related note, the Senate passed HJR 53 last week, which encourages the Alabama Congressional Delegation to support federal legislation designed to encourage job growth and relief for the unemployed.
