Local Firm Receives Top Honor

The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants awarded CPA firm Barfield, Murphy, Shank & Smith, PC of Birmingham, the 2009 Public Service Award for Firms for its commitment to the community. The annual award honors one firm that has demonstrated outstanding public service.

Since Barfield, Murphy, Shank & Smith’s founding in 1991, the firm’s partners and employees have served in pivotal roles in non-profits throughout Birmingham. The firm began working with Habitat for Humanity in 2000 and has donated more than 800 hours to building homes for needy families and has made significant financial donations. BMSS’ volunteer hours and financial contributions have given nine lower income families the opportunity to become homeowners in the greater Birmingham area.

The firm participates in activities to help the Linda Nolen Learning Center, the Arthritis Foundation Jingle Bell Run and the Holy Family High School Cristo Rey Network. For the last five years, BMSS has sponsored blood drives with the American Red Cross. According to the Red Cross, the amount of blood that has been donated could save up to 300 lives.

Red Flags Rule Deadline Extended

FTC Extends Enforcement Deadline for Red Flags Rule

At the request of several Members of Congress, the Federal Trade Commission is further delaying enforcement of the “Red Flags” Rule through December 31, 2010, while Congress considers legislation that would affect the scope of entities covered by the Rule. Today’s announcement and the release of an Enforcement Policy Statement do not affect other federal agencies’ enforcement of the original November 1, 2008 deadline for institutions subject to their oversight to be in compliance.
