Legislative e-Zine

Legislative e-Zine

by Bruce P. Ely, James E. Long, Jr., William T. Thistle, II

There are three major issues to be debated by the Alabama Legislature during its last two meeting days of the 2010 regular session: the $1 billion road and bridge construction proposal, the competing Prepaid Affordable College Tuition (PACT) bail-out plans, and the proposed constitution amendment to legalize and tax electronic bingo.  The road and PACT bills were assigned to conference committee last week because each house passed slightly different bills - the committees will have to collaborate quickly because each house must approve the committee's joint effort to reconcile the differences in each proposal.  The Legislature will meet on Wednesday and Thursday of this week, adjourning sine die on April 22.  Any proposal that passes the Legislature (except for proposed constitutional amendments) during these last two meeting days is subject to the Governor's "pocket-veto" power.  The Governor is currently reviewing several measures passed by the Legislature in recent weeks, including HB 260 (Reemployment Act of 2010) and HB 504 (estimated tax payments conformity), and we expect his signature on both measures this week.

Young CPA Infocast: Generation X & Y in the Profession Today

Join award-winning author and blogger Tammy Erickson on Tuesday, April 27th from 2:00-3:30pm ET for the Young CPA Infocast: Generation X and Y in the Profession Today. For more info, visit: http://www.aicpa.org/YoungCPANetwork/infocast.htm

As Boomers ease toward retirement years, two new generations will increasingly shape our firms and organizations. Generation X is moving into leadership roles and Generation Y is in demand to fill the professional ranks. Each generation brings a unique set of experiences and assumptions to the job - different from Boomers' and from many existing firm norms.

It's easy to misinterpret "the other guy" - or fall into easy stereotypes for thinking about the other generations' actions. But it's increasingly important to create a culture that is welcoming and engaging for talented individuals of all ages.

Celebrate Earth Day by Saving Some Green

Go "Green" to Save Some Green!

The very first Earth Day was 40 years ago in the spring of 1970. At that time, it was a grassroots event that raised concerns about the environment. In 2010, estimates suggest that more than one billion people in more than 190 countries will participate in raising awareness for the environment and implement personal changes to be more "green" on April 22.

Implement these green ideas and save money at the same time.

  • If you are a homeowner and have access to your hot water heater, turn down the temperature from 140 degrees to 120 degrees or lower. This can reduce your utility bill by 6-10 percent.
  • Have a computer at home? Take advantage of your computer's "hibernate" setting when you aren't using it to prevent the computer from wasting energy. Even better, use a surge protector to turn it completely off. Some computer and television models continue to draw energy even if they are turned off.
  • It may seem trivial, but turn off your lights! Now that days are growing longer and brighter, keep your lights turned off unless you need them. If you leave a room, switch the lights off as you leave. The savings may be slight but can really add up over time. Consider adding a timer or motion sensor to your lights to make it more convenient so you don't even have to think about it.
