Dollars and Sense for High Schools |

2009 Young CPA Classroom Blitz
The Alabama Society of CPAs’ Young CPAs are following up their hugely successful 2008 Going Global classroom blitz campaign with Dollars and Sense, a financial education presentation.
In the current economic environment, the time is ripe to introduce or reinforce the concepts of budgeting, needs versus wants, investing, use of credit, and other financial topics. The Young CPA Board decided to make financial education their priority for this year’s one-day blitz. The program will use the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) materials, the High School Financial Planning Program. The student guides are divided into seven lessons, with interactive activities included. Each student will receive his own workbook and each school will receive 2 comprehensive instructor’s manuals. The date is Friday, November 13, 2009 for the 45-60 minute presentation. Schools may elect to have a single presentation, to have multiple presentations or even to have a large assembly.
We Need Volunteers for the Dollars and Sense Classroom Presentation!
Please visit the Dollars and Sense wiki to see which schools across the state have already signed up. If you're interested in making the presentation on November 13th, just add your name!
You will have a PowerPoint presentation and an outline to assist you in the classroom. We will be conducting two live training sessions at the ASCPA office on October 13 and October 22 from 9:00 - 3:00. We will also have two preparatory conference calls during the weeks of November 2 and 9.
If you'd like more information, please contact Diane Christy, ASCPA Communications Director, or visit our website: www.ascpa.org

Business Privilege Tax Deduction |
Proposed Alabama Regulation Strikes Business Privilege Tax Deduction
By Christopher R. Grissom and James E. Long, Jr.
Alabama’s business privilege tax (“BPT”), which is imposed on every business entity doing business or registered to do business in Alabama, provides for a deduction in computing the taxable base equal to the book value of the taxpayer’s investments in the equity of any other taxpayer that is doing business in Alabama. Ala. Code § 40-14A-23. The deduction is designed to avoid the inherent double taxation that would result if the net worth of both the parent/investor and subsidiary/investee are subject to the same tax. The Alabama Department of Revenue (the “Department”), however, has recently proposed a regulation that would strike this statutory deduction for all tax years beginning after January 1, 2010. Read more>>
Please follow the ADOR link, http://www.revenue.alabama.gov/rulehear.html, to review the list of Administrative Rule Making Hearings, specifically 810-2-8-.08, Subtraction from Net Worth the Investment in the Equity of Any Other Taxpayer Doing Business in Alabama (BPT), and 810-3-24.2-.02, Qualified Investment Partnership.
The ASCPA encourages you to write a letter to Lewis Easterly, Secretary, ADOR, or to be in attendance at the hearings. Mr. Easterly’s address is Alabama Department of Revenue, 50 North Ripley Street, Gordon Persons Building Room 4112, Montgomery, AL 36104. Email address is lewis.easterly@revenue.alabama.gov. Comments are due by October 5th. Please copy any correspondence to jbirmingham@ascpa.org.
