Financial Literacy Tax Workshops

Birmingham Self-Employment Tax Initiative Workshops

In late summer the Alabama Society was approached about a new financial education program to assist small business owners and sole proprietor in preparing Schedule C documents for filing with the IRS.  We agreed to help by providing volunteers in the Birmingham area for the second part of the workshops, which will take place in November and December.  Here is a link for some background on Self-Employment Tax Initiative (SETI), and a list of the scheduled dates coming up.

Home Ownership: Are You Ready?

Are you really ready for home ownership?

The purchase of a first home is an exciting time in anyone’s life. It’s also a large financial undertaking, a fact that leaves many people wondering whether they’re prepared for this big step. The Alabama Society of CPAs suggests you answer these questions to help you decide if the time is right for you.

Owning your own home is a tempting prospect, but make sure that you are not hurried into making a decision. Home sales have generally been slow for the past year, which makes it less likely a house you like will be bought overnight. Even when the market is hot, though, it’s best to look around in different neighborhoods and at various types of homes to see what you can afford and to be sure you have all the information you need. <<Read More

Public Service Award

Do you know a member who has excelled in public service?

We would like to recognize him or her.

The Public Service Award Program encourages state societies and AICPA members to recognize CPAs who have distinguished themselves in public service activities at the local, state, regional, or national level.  In return, presenting a public service award provides numerous opportunities for motivating volunteers, publicizing the public service activities of CPAs and reinforcing the profession's reputation for commitment to the public good.

The ASCPA encourages members to nominate firms or individuals for this award.  State level recipients will then be submitted for a national award, to be given at the AICPA spring council meeting.  Use the link to access all documents and guidelines for submission.

Nomination Form

The deadline has been extended to Thursday, November 12.

Financial Literacy Education Summit

The Second Annual Financial Literacy Education Summit
Friday, December 4th, 2009
Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum

presented by the Central Alabama Financial Education Coalition

Considering the economic roller coaster during the last eighteen months, there has never been a better time to teach financial education. The Central Alabama Financial Education Coalition (CAFEC), comprised of businesses and agencies across the state, is holding its second Annual Financial Literacy Education Summit on December 4th. Held from 8:30am-4:00pm at the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum in Birmingham, the day-long panel discussion and lecture event will help those teaching financial education find the latest information, strategies and resources available.

“CAFEC realizes that the programs teaching financial education to consumers need support in coordinating services, marketing and awareness, and ongoing professional development,” said Julie Beckham, Executive Director of The Literacy Council and Chairman of the CAFEC Steering Committee. “The coalition is a dedicated group of professionals from all segments of the community working to build that support system.”

The Alabama Society has played a key role in support of this new financial education resource, both financially and through staffing.  The ASCPA is again a sponsor of the Summit and a founding member of CAFEC.  Your participation or sponsorship in the Summit and membership in CAFEC pushes forward ASCPA goals of improved financial education for all Alabama citizens and is strongly encouraged.
