red tape Consumer Financial Protection Agency

ASCPA Weighs in on Proposal to Establish a

New Consumer Financial Protection Agency

Last week, ASCPA President & CEO Jeannine Birmingham, CPA, wrote Congressman Spencer Bachus (R-AL), a member of the House Committee on Financial Services, to express concern about the possible addition of redundant regulations on CPAs who are already subject to oversight by the IRS and state boards of accountancy.

HR 3126, introduced by the House Committee on Financial Services, proposes to establish a new Consumer Financial Protection Agency (CFPA).  The bill would give regulatory power to the CFPA that would cover financial services and products provided by a CPA to an individual, such as tax preparation and planning, as well as personal financial planning services and, perhaps, even the extension of the pro bono financial literacy efforts by CPAs across the country.  It’s critical that the Committee is aware of the profession’s volunteer efforts to improve the financial understanding of all Americans.

Mobility: The Freedom for CPAs to Practice Across State Lines

The majority of states have adopted mobility legislation which is a practice privilege that generally permits a licensed CPA in good standing from a substantially equivalent state to practice outside of his or her principal place of business without having to obtain another license.

Find all of your answers about the new mobility provisions for each jurisdiction in the Accountancy License Library, a FREE on-line resource at NASBA’s mobility page: http://www.nasbatools.com/mobility/index
